Multi-split systems are reasonable to use when the task is to air-condition several adjacent premises, and if you want to create comfort on the whole building or the entire floor, wisely use VRF systems.

 

Multi-split system

Multiple systems are a kind of split-systems. Their difference is that one external block is connected to several internal – usually from 2 to 4 – 5 pieces. In this case, internal blocks can be of different power (usually from 2 to 5 kW) and different types. This constructive solution allows you to save space on the exterior wall of the building and not so much as to spoil the appearance of the outer blocks. At the same time, contrary to popular belief, the replacement of several split systems on one multi-split system does not result in a gain in price because the cost of equipment is about the same, and the labor and cost of installation – 1.5 – 2 times higher because of longer communications. In addition, when the external block of multi-split systems fails, all internal blocks cease to work – from this point of view, the reliability of several split systems is higher. Therefore, multi-split systems are usually used only if it is impossible to place several external blocks on the house’s outer wall.

If the number of internal blocks becomes more than six, and the maximum distances between blocks reach 100 meters, such systems begin to be called multizonal (zonal module) or VRF systems. Another advantage of split and multi-split systems is the large selection of different types of internal blocks. Among them are the following modifications: wall air conditioning, channel air conditioning, cassette air conditioning, air conditioning, and column air conditioning.

 

Wall air conditioning

The most common and most affordable is a wall air conditioner or a split wall-type system. Sometimes it is also called simply a household split system because in apartments, most often used they. Wall air conditioning can be installed in any small room – office, apartment, store. Their capacity (2 – 7 kW) allows them to cool from 15 to 70 sq m. The inner block of wall air conditioning is usually installed at the top of the wall, not far from the window, and the outer block – under the window. This placement reduces the distance between the blocks and the length of inter-block communications, which usually does not exceed 5 – 7 meters.

 

Canal air conditioning

Canal or central air conditioning is installed behind a hanging or under the ceiling, completely hiding the inner block. The distribution of chilled air is carried out by a system of insulated ducts, which are also placed in the inter-ceiling space. Thanks to this design, the channel air conditioner can cool several rooms at once. The typical capacity of these air conditioners is 12 – 25 kW, which is enough to cool a small office or a 4 – 5-room apartment. The fundamental difference between the canal air conditioning and the rest of the split systems is the ability to supply fresh air in the volumes needed for full ventilation of air-conditioned premises.

Thus, the use of one canal air conditioner allows solving both ventilation and air conditioning of the whole office, apartment, or cottage. You only need to take care of the correct calculation of air exchange, the selection of air conditioner on cooling power and static pressure, provide the installation of an electric or water calorie to heat outdoor air in winter.

 

Cassette air conditioning

To install a cassette air conditioner and the canal, you need a hanging ceiling. However, unlike the channel air conditioner, the “cassette” distributes cooled air through the lower part of the unit. Accordingly, the lower part of this air conditioner has a standard ceiling tile size – 600 x 600 mm, and at high power twice as much – 1200 x 600 mm and closed by a decorative grille with distribution blinds. The main advantage of the cassette air conditioner is invisibility, as the only decorative grille is visible. Another advantage is the even distribution of airflow in four directions, allowing only one cassette air conditioner to cool a large room (if you use wall split systems for a similar effect would have to use 2 to 3 air conditioners of lower power).

 

Floor – air conditioning

If the room does not have a hanging ceiling, the alternative to the cassette air conditioner can be floor-ceiling (or just ceiling) air conditioning. These air conditioners are small in-depth – 18 – 25 centimeters. As the name implies, they are installed either at the bottom of the wall or on the ceiling. At the same time, the airflow in the first case is directed upwards, in the second – horizontally along with the ceiling. This design allows for the even distribution of chilled air across the room and avoids direct flow to people. There are models of ceiling air conditioners distributing cooled air in four directions at once, and the force of the flow is regulated separately in each direction. Such a conditioner can be successfully used to cool rooms of complex shape, which do not have a hanging ceiling.

 

Column (floor) air conditioning

Column (floor or closet) air conditioning is used where a large cool performance is required, and there are no strict requirements for the design of the room. These air conditioners resemble a refrigerator, have a lot of weight, and are tired on the floor. Column air conditioners require a relatively large area for their placement, as they create a strong flow of cooled air and do not allow to be close to the air conditioner.

 

Precision air conditioning

Precision air conditioners are a kind of column (cabinet) air conditioners. They are used in computer rooms, ATS, cellular stations, high-precision production facilities, and other places saturated with expensive electronics. These air conditioners can maintain high accuracy with excellent reliability at the specified temperature (± 1 degrees Celsius) and humidity (± 2%).

 

Multizonal Air Conditioning Systems (VRF and VRV Systems)

Multizonal air conditioning systems are a type of central air conditioning system. This class of air conditioners appeared relatively recently – the first VRV system was introduced in 1982. They can consist of several external and large number of internal blocks (up to 30) united by a single control system using a personal computer and the general wiring of Freon pipelines. The inner blocks can be removed from the outside at distances of up to 100 meters, equivalent to 17 stories, and the height difference – 50 meters. This allows you to hide outdoor devices on the roof, yard, or other little signs. Internal blocks can be of various types: wall, cassette, canal, floor, ceiling, columns. Freon is commonly used as a cooler. VRF systems have a high degree of automation, durability, and low operating costs.

 

RAC (ROOM AIR CONDITION)

Household air conditioners. This equipment class usually includes all window and mobile air conditioners and split-wall and floor-ceiling systems with a capacity of up to 6 kW.

 

PAC (PACKAGE AIR CONDITION) 

Semi-industrial air conditioners. This equipment class usually includes all split systems of the canal, cassette, floor-ceiling, and wall type with a capacity of more than 6 kW.

 

Central air conditioning

Its function is cleaning, pre-heating, or cooling of street air, which is distributed on the premises with the help of a system of ducts. Typically, the central air conditioner uses water coming from the chiller to cool the air. Most often used in conjunction with the scheme of chiller-frankly in large office buildings, hotels, museums, large government institutions.

Chiller

A chiller is a water-cooling machine. It is a key hub of the central air conditioning system. One such unit can cool huge office buildings.

 

Foil

Both in appearance and their device, funkily are very similar to internal blocks of split systems. Only as an “external block” for uncoils is a water-cooling machine-chiller, and instead of Freon, used water. If there is a boiler, the fan coil system can also be used for heating.

 

Rooftop

This is a monoblock installed on the roof or next to the cooled room. Most of all resemble a large window air conditioner, the size of a TV, to a car. The rooftop itself cools or heats the air and feeds it through the duct system. It is used to cool large rooms – gyms, supermarkets, cafes, railway stations, and airports. The U.S. is actively used in cottage construction.
